I will take one story as a case in point. This one happens to be one of our favorites. The three little pigs. This one has several morals that can help our kids a thing or two. First the story starts out with a mother pig telling her kids a life lesson. So, our first lesson is listen to wise council from those who have been there before. Also there is the obvious moral of needing to work hard and being industrious in order to be successful. Now this is both important and true but not the greatest lesson that we learn from the three little pigs.
To me the real lesson is very similar to the wise man and the foolish man, and in case you were wondering I have been teaching it this way wince my oldest was in diapers long before VeggieTales came out with a three little pigs based on the wise man and the foolish man. Which is a great video my kids love so if you have kids check that out. Back to what I was saying. The wise man built his house upon the rock and it was saved. The foolish man was washed away because he did not build his house on a sure foundation. The same is true in our lives. If we build our lives on the sure bedrock of the savior then when the storms of life hit we will be able to weather them. If we haven't built our life on a sure foundation we will be washed away in the floods that come.
In the story of the three little pigs the two that build their houses out of insufficient materiel get their houses blown away. The third little piggy that takes the time and effort to secure and build with good strong material, sees its house stand when the wolf came huffing and puffing. So to when we build our lives out of the straw and twigs of worldliness they will not hold up to the huffing and puffing of the adversary. If we build our life from the stuff of the gospel, faith testimony and priesthood power it won't come crumbling down to the huffs and the puffs.
This analogy works so well that I have added three verses to the end of the wise man and the foolish man just for the fun of it. There is one verse for each of the pigs, and it works well too.
If there are any ways that any of you have related common stories, I would love to hear them.
