It's amazing how quickly kids can pick up things. When we sing at home I lead the music. Between singing at home and at church my one year old is already starting to understand the concept of conducting music and she, of course, wants to lead the song herself. A one year old wanting to be the center of attention, now, there's a shocker. The point is that she is learning so fast, and you'd better believe I have never taught her how to lead music, at least not on purpose.
That gets me wondering how many other things I am teaching her by accident and how many of those things should not be passed down to the next generation. She is still so small, but she absorbs everything like a sponge. It just goes to show me how important it is to set a good example for my kids.
We home school, and it's important to have good structured lessons that maximize learning, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The most important lessons your children will learn won't be in their math or grammar classes no matter where they have them. It will be in how their adult role models live their everyday lives. Our success as parents will not be measured in how much money our children make or how famous they are, but if they are honest and upright people. No matter what else we teach them and regardless of whether they go to public, private or home school, the greatest lessons they ever learn will be from us. So let us make sure they are the right lessons, shall we?
And yes, I did say my kids, well my three older kids, sang in Latin. We are teaching it home school, and I have to admit that it is intimidating to teach a language you don't know at all, but the two older ones are excelling. They are getting lessons twice as fast as normal, but are both acing it. It is interesting, I have always had a real tough time with languages, but they don't. They need to go at the accelerated pace. That's what's best for them. We always need to make sure we cater to the needs and abilities of our children and not let our own preconceived notions get in the way of their learning.
To all you parents out their trying to educate your children to the best of your ability and that's pretty much all of you parents, good luck and you have a sacred charge that the powers of heaven will aid you with, if you but ask. Good luck to all of you parents and may God bless each and everyone of you.
