I believe that one can find foods that taste great and are very good for us as well. That's been a hobby of mine as of late. My recent injury has made to much experimenting pretty much an impossibility. I had a bone infection in my foot for those of you who don't know. I want to share ideas and recipes as I discover them.
Tip one pay attention to your condiments. They can taste great and add real flavor to your foods. The wrong ones can add a tremendous am out of fat, calories, and sugar to your diet without even realizing it. When judging condiment pay attention to serving size. There is quite a difference in ketchup and barbeque sauce. One has a serving size of one tablespoon and one is twice that large.
Ketchup - this usually has four grams of sugar per tablespoon. Use it lightly and in most instances, like on hamburgers or meat loaf try salsa. Salsa has very few calories and nearly no sugar and I think is much more flavorful than ketchup.
Mustard - I hate the stuff but yellow mustard is a good condiment.
Barbeque Sauce - One of the most sugar packed condiments known to exist. Usually 10-16 grams of sugar in a two tablespoon serving. If you look you usually find 6-8 grams of sugar in a serving. If there is 8 grams a serving it is equal to ketchup and is fine in moderation. These lower sugar verieties use spice over sugar to give your meats flavor. Fine with me I like spicy food.
Mayo - Very high in fats and calories. I like to get a creamy hoseradish sauce. It is similar in both fat and calories but I use about a third of the amount on my sandwiches yet it gives me much more flavor.
Relish - Sweet relish is packed with sugar. One of the favorite coniments in my house is dill relish. It has virtually no carbs, sugars, or even calories, but that great strong dill flavor. I love to use it on a verity of proteins. I am thinking of cooking it on top of some Talapia, yum sounds delicious.
Soy Sauce. Low in calories and sugars but very high in sodium. Get the low sodium varieties but you still have to watch the sodium count.
This is not a complete list of condiment but covers many of the big ones. Do your own research but a lot of the substitutes tastes better than the originals. Have fun and eat wisely.
