Why did she stop her son and bring him home? She gave two reasons. First, she said she didn't want to see her son end up like Freddy Gray. I can understand that. With all of the violence and with people attacking the police, it would be really easy for on of the rioters to get hurt or killed.
Her second reason was that vandalizing police is not justice. Good for her and that is so true. How can attacking police or ripping a CVS pharmacy to pieces bring justice to Freddie Gray. It can't. Vengeance is not justice and will never bring justice.
I want justice for Freddie Gray as much as anyone, but what does that mean? It does not mean that we just automatically convict any police officer near him. No, justice is always deliberate and meticulous. We first conduct a complete investigation. We find out what happened the best that we can. Then we go after anyone who committed illegal action through the court system. Let's get justice for Freddy Gray, but let's do it the right way.
On another note, why are people destroying a pharmacy? I mean really. That provides jobs and services for the people in that community. That was reprehensible in a way hard to fathom. As a diabetic I am a bit partisan, but what if someone had run out of insulin and had a prescription filled at the CVS. Then the store closes early because of the violence and the building is torn down. Now they can't get their medication in the morning. They could probably get it from another CVS eventually, but just one or two days with out insulin or other diabetic medications can be problematic. Diabetes is not unique either. There are many medical conditions that just a slight delay in one's medication can lead to real consequences.
What were these people thinking? My guess is they were not thinking. They were not using the rational parts of their minds and let themselves be ruled only by passion. Let's not do that. Reason should always have a seat at the table. Let's be like that mom who rescued her son from the dangers of his own emotions by using her reason in an emotionally charged situation.
Good for her.
