I have heard some people criticizing the tradition. Almost no one completes these goals by the end of the year, so why even try? What is even the point in making these silly resolutions. I think that this misses the point entirely. The point of making these resolutions isn't completing them.
The point in making these resolutions is in the making of them. It is the constant struggle to better ourselves. Yes, we will fail often and sometimes spectacularly, but that's okay. Perfection, isn't our goal. Well, okay, it is our goal in the eternal sense, but perfection is not possible in our current state. Instead, we need to be moving forward in the right direction and in the next life that will lead us to our own perfection. Life is all about heading in the right direction, veering off in the wrong direction, and then getting back on the right path.
This is what is so important about New Year's resolutions. They can be course corrections to get us back on the right path. If we get off track again, that's fine if we realize it and get back on track later.
Just because we don't follow through with our resolutions for an entire year, dose not mean that we get nothing out of it and that we should not make them. For example let's say that we resolve to read our scriptures every day all year and we only make it for three months. In that month don't you think that you could gain some critical insights that could help you in your life? So should you not make the resolution because it has little chance of succeeding?
I would argue that each day that you complete a resolution is a victory unto itself. Don't let the likelihood of failing in the course of a year prevent you from learning both in success and in failure, from your resolutions.
My advise is to keep making those resolutions and they could help you in ways that it is difficult to comprehend. The best to you and yours in this blessed New Year.
