I know I am not perfect at these simple things yet. I need to get better. So how do you love someone whom you think is unworthy? As a very flawed individual I don't think I have all of the answers, but here are a few of my thoughts. Most of these go back to the New Testament. I think if anyone's life holds the key than it would be the one perfect person to ever walk the Earth.
First I think it is important to try to empathize with the other person. Sometimes if we understand where the other person is coming from it is easier to have compassion for them and easier to love and forgive them as well. Jesus said that we cannot judge someone unless we have walked a mile in his shoes. We all spend so much time stuck in our own world viewing the world with our own biases that sometimes we forget that everyone else see the world the way they do for a reason. Empathizing with others is a first good step for developing love for someone.
Jesus gave us the council to pray for our enemies. He told us to pray for those who despite fully use us. It is important though how we pray for them. First of all I think it is obvious that praying that the other person will die or that other harm would come to them does not really count. I also think that praying that the other person will stop being mean or come to their senses does not count either. Not that it is bad to ask that someone leave you alone in your prayer, but that is not really praying for them, is it? I think it is praying for yourself. Praying for them is getting on your knees and sincerely asking our father in heaven for things to benefit them. Ask heavenly father that they may feel his love and receive divine council ask for things that will truly benefit them. Here is the key, although most of those things will benefit you, you have to ask for their sake and not yours. If you ask that they receive divine revelation, it should be because of the fact that it will help in their own salvation and for the fact that such a revelation would probably mean that they would be less hostile towards you.
Spend time around those who disagree and dislike you. Jesus went to the houses of pharisee's and Publicans, and some criticized him for it to. Everyone needed his love. If we want to be like him we have to learn to go anywhere he needs us to go even if it makes us uncomfortable. Even if it means being around people we don't like or people we think are unworthy. Remember the whole require no physician. Anywhere the holy spirit tell us to go is a place that we are required to be. Being around those we don't agree with can help us build sympathy and empathy as long as we enter into it with the right spirit.
The best way to love others is to serve others. Jesus spent his life serving mankind and we must do the same. It is not always easy in fact it is almost never easy but once again. it is simple. If we learn to serve others we will learn to love others. Once again we must serve others with the intent of doing what is the best interest for them. Not to prove we are better than them.
That is the key, isn't it, Humility. If we realize our own faults and weaknesses and realize how much we need the everlasting mercy of the Savior it's easier to except the faults and imperfections of others.
I write this not to prove that I know so much and am so right about everything. No I am writing this because I am struggling with it right now and am just trying to work it out for my self. As a result if any of you have any Ideas of anything I have missed please share. I really want to know.
