There seems to be two base reactions that many people have to these kind of cataclysmic natural disaster possibilities. Some people are all doom and gloom convinced that some massive disaster will hit and either destroy all life on Earth or irrevocably change our life to the point that we will live in some sort of post-apocalyptic dystopian nightmare. Others seem to believe that these things are so rare that there is almost no chance of it happening so why even think about it. I am where a lot of people are in the middle.
There is no real point in being consumed by the possibility of a world wide catastrophe. Could it happen, sure, but being convinced it will can really negatively effect your life if it doesn't happen. You know the people that quit there jobs and buy massive amounts of food and wait for the end. Then when the end does not happen they are left with nothing. Convinced that humanity is doomed is just not healthy for our mental state or your relationships there is just so much you miss out on when you are convinced that everything is going to end.
For those who are convinced that nothing like that will happen, you are just as wrong. Look massive disasters have routinely through the course of the Earth's history. They are not going to stop just because man has arrived. Yes it is very unlikely that a massive earth shattering cataclysm will happen in our lifetimes, but at some point it will happen. And even if something truly devastating happens, like a super eruption there are many things that you could do to increase your chance of surviving or even thriving through such an event, so why not take some sensible precautions.
My son wanted to watch a movie called super volcano, which is about a super volcano under Yellowstone in Wyoming erupting in VIE8 eruption, the largest on the scale, my 10 year old daughter did not. She gets scared by such things. I said I wanted all of us to watch, but in a different way. I wanted us to watch and see how we would be affected her in Virginia and what preparations we would need to weather such a storm. Being properly prepared is the best way to survive but also the best way to bring peace to our minds. For those who sat that Jesus is the only way to peace, I say yes, but Jesus has taught us to prepare in all things both spiritual and temporal. the gospel of Christ is one of preparation.
