The results could not have been more stark. Ananias and his wife were killed for their treachery and there lies to the Lord. Barnabas became an important disciple and an important missionary and a companion of Saul.
Quick note, the Bible does not mention how much money he had, but the fact he had a number of possessions to sell says that he was worth quite a bit. In the movie he is portrayed as a rich man which Think is likely accurate.
In Acts we have the story of Barnabas in the last two verses in the fourth chapter of Acts, and then in the beginning of the fifth chapter we have the story of Ananias. So these stories are back to back. I think that is important.
When you read the story it becomes clear that Ananias and his wife were not struck down because they were rich. They were not struck down because they kept some of their wealth. In the Bible, Peter is very clear on that point. They are struck down because they lied to the Lord. They swore to the servant of the Lord that they were doing one thing when they were doing another. This wasn't about money; it was about where Ananias and where Barnabas put their faith and how honest they were to the Lord.
Let's all strive to be honest with the Lord. Let's learn by the examples of both of these men.
